The Stooges' careers with Columbia was
challenged even before they made their first starring film. On the
day when Moe, the leader of the act, signed with Columbia, Larry was
at Universal, signing a different contract for the team. The two studios
fought over the rights to the team until someone pointed out that
Moe had signed the Columbia deal three hours before Larry inked his
pact. Columbia got the Stooges, and that left Universal Studios free
to sign another up-and-coming comedy team (Abbott and Costello).
